What Is Lentinan

What is lentinan

Lentinan is isolated from the mushroom L. edodes. The primary structure of β-glucan in lentinan is consisted of β-(1–3)-glucose backbone with two (1–6)-β-glucose branches of each five glucose units.161,162 Lentinan-based drugs are available as injections, capsules and tablets in China. Lentinan is clinically used for cancer treatment both in China and Japan. According to the clinical studies published in and outside of China, lentinan-based drugs are used for the treatment of various cancers, including lung cancer,47–58 gastric cancer,59–63 colorectal cancer64–68 and other cancers.69,70 In addition, lentinan-based drugs are also used for treating HIV, hepatitis and malignant pleural effusion.

Lentinan is approved as an adjuvant for stomach cancer therapy in Japan in 1985. As a biological response modifier, lentinan inhibits the tumor growth by regulating the immune system through activating immune cells, promoting the T- and B-lymphocyte proliferation and enhancing the activities of NK cells in mouse-, rat-, chicken- and guinea pig-based animal models.122–128 These studies also demonstrate that lentinan stimulates the productions of different cytokines.

What foods contain lentinan

Lentinan is a polysaccharide derived from the vegetative parts of the edible Japanese shiitake mushroom. It is the cell wall constituent extracted from the fruiting bodies or mycelium of L. edodes. The light, amber fungi are found on fallen broad-leaf trees, such as chestnut, beech, or mulberry.

lentinan benefits

Lentinan is a substance that comes from the shiitake mushroom. Medical professionals use lentinan to boost the effects of regular medicines used for treating cancer and HIV infection. They give lentinan intravenously (by IV) or as a shot (by injection).

Possibly Effective for…

Treatment of HIV infection, when given with the medication didanosine (ddI, Videx).

Insufficient Evidence to Rate Effectiveness for…

Breast cancer, when given by injection. Developing evidence suggests that lentinan may improve the way regular cancer drugs work in people with breast cancer.

Stomach cancer, when given by injection. Developing evidence suggests that lentinan may improve the way regular cancer drugs work in people with stomach cancer. However, lentinan seems less likely to work in stomach cancer patients who are malnourished.

Prostate cancer, when given by injection. Developing evidence suggests that lentinan may improve the way regular cancer drugs work in men with prostate cancer.

Other conditions.

lentinan allergy

Shiitake flagellate dermatitis is a toxic reaction to lentinan, found in fresh, powdered, or lightly cooked shiitake mushrooms. Lentinan is a thermolabile polysaccharide that activates interleukin 1 secretion, leading to vasodilation, haemorrhage and rash.

polysaccharide lentinan

Lentinan is a polysaccharide extracted from Lentinula edodes. β-Glucan is the major bioactive component in lentinan with immunostimulatory effect. The antitumor property of lentinan was reported in 1960s. Biochemical studies indicate that immunocytes can be activated by lentinan through multiple signaling pathways, such as TLR4/Dectin1-MAPK and Syk-PKC-NFκB pathways. Though it has been approved as an adjuvant therapeutic drug both in China and Japan for treating cancers since 1980s, a systematic review of clinical studies of lentinan has not been conducted elaborately. In this review, over 9474 reported lentinan-associated cancer treatment cases are evaluated and summarized from 135 independent studies in China during the past 12 years (2004-2016) based on CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), VIP (Chongqing VIP Chinese Scientific Journals Database) and Wanfang database.

What is lentinula Edodes used for?

Lentinus edodes is full of beta-glucans, compounds that have been shown to act as antivirals – against hepatitis, HIV and herpes, to name a few. Studies have shown that in vitro extracts of Lentinula edodes can also prevent influenza (flu) virus growing during the early stages of infection.

What is shiitake dermatitis?

Shiitake Dermatitis is a skin eruption that resembles whiplash marks and occurs after consumption of raw shiitake mushrooms. It is caused by a toxic reaction to lentinan, a thermolabil polysaccharide which decomposes upon heating. We report the second case of this dermatitis in Brazil.
