What is Inositol?

Inositol is an essential micronutrient for salmon, carp, tilapia and shrimps, particularly juveniles. This conclusion is extended to all fish and crustaceans. The requirements differ among species and may be in the range of 250–500 mg/kg complete feed for fish. The use of inositol in feed for fish and crustaceans is considered safe at the recommended levels; setting a maximum content is not considered necessary. Based on the study provided in dogs, it was not possible to (i) demonstrate the essentiality of dietary inositol for dogs and (ii) conclude on the safety of dietary inositol at the recommended use levels of between 500 and 3 000 mg/kg.

Fish and aquatic animals, rare birds, fur beasts, ornamental cats, dogs and other rare birds and exotic animals need to be supplemented with inositol. In prawn and fish feed, inositol is usually added at 300-500 mg/kg. Swiss Roche Pharmaceuticals recommends 1000 mg/kg for fish and salmon feed, and 150 mg/kg for eel and carp, otherwise Inositol deficiency will appear.

Practice has proved that the addition of inositol to feed can promote the growth of livestock and prevent death, and its added amount is usually 0.2%-0.5% of the feed. In Japan, the annual consumption of inositol for animals alone is more than 100t.
