Quercetin powder (C15H10O7) is an aglycone, lacking an attached sugar. It is a brilliant citron yellow needle crystal and entirely insoluble in cold water, poorly soluble in hot water, but quite soluble in alcohol and lipids. Pure quercetin powder glycoside is formed by attaching a glycosyl group (a sugar such as glucose, rhamnose, or rutinose) as a replacement for one of the OH groups (commonly at position 3). In conclusion, we investigated the quercetin modulated Mdr1 expression in Caco-2 cells and in chicken. This is the first report demonstrated that quercetin increased the Mdr1 expression in the tissues (liver, kidney, duodenum, and jejunum) of chickens. Consequently, this resulted in the Rho 123 uptake modulation and affected the pharmacokinetics of enrofloxacin in broilers. These presented findings have strong implication that quercetin contained in animal feed may have an effect on the bioavailability of numerous xenobiotics including antimicrobials, which are P-gp substrates, via overexpression of Mdr1 and efflux by P-gp.
