What is Astragalus Extract?

Astragalus extract, also known as Mianqi, is the root of leguminous plant Astragalus, which is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine blindly. 1. Nutrient composition and function of Astragalus

It has the functions of replenishing qi and raising yang, consolidating the surface and antiperspirant, holding toxins and purging pus, diuresis and swelling.

2. Astragalus as an immune enhancer to prevent and treat livestock and poultry diseases

Cui Baoan et al. randomly divided the 3-week-old chickens into 3 groups, each with 30 chickens. The first group was fed with 1% astragalus complete feed, and the second group was fed with levamisole hydrochloride tablets, 1 tablet per day. The experimental results show that Astragalus and Levamisole have a good immune enhancement effect on chickens, but Astragalus extract has a better effect in promoting growth.

3. Astragalus as a nutritional additive to improve the performance of livestock and poultry production

3.1 Application on pigs

Meng Zhaoju et al. randomly divided 20 piglets into two groups, each with 10 piglets. 1% of astragalus powder was added to the feed as the experimental group, and the other group as the control group. The results showed that the average daily gain of the experimental group was 23.6% higher than that of the control group. (P<0.01), the weight gain ratio of feed consumption decreased by 13.3% (P<0.05). From the health observation, the pigs in the test group grew well throughout the whole period, had a strong appetite, ruddy skin, shiny fur, and no leftovers. See diarrhea and other diseases, and the control group pigs have 3 hair diseases. These also indicate that the astragalus powder additive has the effect of disease prevention and growth promotion.

3.2 Application on chicken

Zhou Kenian et al. randomly divided 60 1-day-old Jingbai chicks into two groups, each with 30. , Sophora flavescens, Artemisia argyi and Jianqu composition). The test group was fed with 1% astragalus root extract and the control group was not added with medicine. The egg production rate of the test group was 79.4% and that of the control group was 72.1% (P<0.05) The difference is significant; the death elimination rate is 5.5% in the experimental group and 9.5% in the control group (P<0.01), the difference is extremely significant; the egg feed ratio is 1:2.5 in the experimental group and 1:2.64 in the control group (P<0.05) ); The economic benefit test group is 28% higher than the control group [9].

3.3 Application on dairy cows

Zhang Xiuying and others used ten Chinese herbal medicines composed of astragalus, dandelion, and angelica to feed milk cows, and studied their effects on milk cow’s lactation performance. Sixty black-and-white cows with the same parity, no difference in daily milk production of 4 kg, no clinical mastitis and other diseases were selected, and the daily supplement of each cow was 180 grams. There was no significant difference in the amount of milk. After the addition of the drug, the milk production of the five consecutive test groups was extremely significant or significantly higher than that of the control group; through the analysis of the milk composition, the fat intake rate was 5.92% higher than that before the addition of the drug; Later, the detection rate of subclinical mastitis in the experimental group was reduced by 13% compared with before the medication, while the control group increased by 5% at this stage [10].

3.4 Application on Rabbit

According to Zhao Wenhan’s report, 2% of compound astragalus membranaceus root extract (consisting of Astragalus Astragali, Chen Qu, Tangerine Peel, Citrus aurantium, Magnolia officinalis, Schisandra, etc.) was added to the meat rabbit feed and fed 3 times a day as usual after mixing. Meat rabbits with an average body weight of 1160g, after feeding for 60 days, the weight gain rate can reach 106.72%, which is 42.72% higher than that of meat rabbits that do not use Astragalus powder. When Astragalus powder is used as a feed additive for meat rabbits, its weight gain effect is significant. Reduce feeding costs, shorten the breeding cycle, and improve economic benefits [11]. He Mingzhong reported that the compound astragalus powder (consisting of astragalus, tangerine peel, atractylodes, hawthorn, licorice, dangshen, yellow lotus, etc.) can promote the growth of rabbits, improve production performance, improve rabbits’ immunity, increase feed utilization, and reduce Feeding cost.

3.5 Application in aquaculture

Wang Yongling and others added 1% astragalus membranaceus root extract dry powder to the feed of the silver crucian carp and found that it has a better weight gain effect, the weight gain rate increased by 7.36% compared with the control group, and the feed coefficient was significantly reduced [13]. Li Yi and others crushed and sieved more than ten Chinese herbal medicines such as Astragalus, Codonopsis, Rhubarb, Banlan, etc., and then made compound additives at the ratio of 1%, 2%, and 3% to the basic feed to make pellet feed and feed it to Macrobrachium rosenbergii. The effect of this additive on the immune function of Macrobrachium rosenbergii was studied. The results showed that the percentage of phagocytosis and phagocytosis index, serum lysozyme activity and phenoloxidase activity of Macrobrachium rosenbergii were significantly increased. After being challenged by Aeromonas hydrophila, the immune protection rate of each experimental group was also significantly improved. Among the test groups, the 2% group had the best effect. Experiments show that the additive can significantly improve the immune function of Macrobrachium rosenbergii and effectively prevent the infection of Aeromonas hydrophila
